In case you don’t have an OG Mexican mom in your life, let me tell you a little bit about them. They are some of the sweetest, most nurturing mothers around… but they can also be very direct and blunt, and they speak “sin pelos en la lengua” (literal translation: “without hair on the tongue,” meaning they don’t sugarcoat things).
Isaac and I were visiting my parents last weekend, just sitting on the couch talking, when my mom suddenly turned to me and said:
“You should keep drinking the Chupa Panza tea. I would drink it if I could, but it doesn’t work for me.”
Now, in case you don’t know, Chupa Panza tea is supposed to help with weight loss, bloating, and digestion—it helps cleanse the colon and detox the body. It’s meant to be drunk daily, but I only drink it on weekends because (TMI warning: feel free to skip to the next paragraph)… I refuse to poop anywhere other than my own house. So, needless to say, it doesn’t really work as well as it should for me.

Here’s the thing—I can honestly say that throughout my life, my mom hasn’t really commented negatively on my weight or appearance. Unlike some other moms I know, she’s always been very sweet and positive with all four of her kids. So, when she said that, I was a little taken aback. But knowing her, it probably came from a place of love (and from the fact that I keep saying I want to lose weight but then never actually do anything about it). So, I was by no means upset or offended and it actually led to a very positive, intimate conversation with her.
Anyway… now I’m left wondering if I should actually buy the tea again and give it another try.

Do you have a mom who tells it like it is? What’s the funniest or most brutally honest thing she’s ever said to you? Share it in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories!
