My husband and I are big readers, and we hope Isaac will be one too. Reading at bedtime has been part of our nightly routine since he was tiny, and we keep books accessible throughout the day. From 12–18 months these were the books he reached for again and again. Here’s why they were his favorites — and ours too.
- Los Pollitos (Little Chickies)

Why we love it: This is a bilingual book based on the Nick Jr show Canticos which Isaac watches off and on on Youtube. He loves that it’s a flipbook, he recognizes the characters from the tv, and it was a hit with him from the moment he saw it. We’ve read it many times at bedtime, and he likes to turn to it whenever he sees it.

2. Little Blue Truck

Why we love it: We have few of the books in this series and Isaac is in LOVE with them. When we got the first book Isaac was so obsessed with it, we read it every night for 3 weeks (it got to the point I could recite the book from memory!) but it helped him identify some of the animals on the pages. We’ve bought a few more books in the series since we saw how taken he was with the first book and they’ve all been a hit (he’s even taken them in the car with him rather than picking a toy.

3. First 100 Words Book Set

Why we love it: I mean look at this video. Need I say more? Well, I will lol These books are a very good size, easy for little hands to hold and flip through. The pictures are bright and labelled with big bold letters. We often find these books in various rooms of the house Isaac has walked into with them. They are also easy to clean (Isaac got sick on one of them and it cleaned up easily).

4. Our Very Little Library

Why we love it: From day one this series was a hit, especially the Transportation book (because of the bus on the second page). This was him the very first night we had the books. These books might be small, but they are sturdy, they’ve held up to Isaac throwing them and standing on top of them. I love that they come in a study box with a handle on top allowing Isaac to carry them around through the house. The one drawback: it’s difficult to get the box open (sometimes even for me).

5. Dia de los Muertos

Why we love it: This was a birthday gift from one of my cousins. Isaac is drawn to the colorful pictures and it is just thick enough that it’s easy for Isaac to turn to. He thinks the fact that the sun and moon have mustaches is hilarious and points it out every time. I also love that it’s an easy, fun way to teach him about our Mexican culture.

6. Baby loves Quarks

Why we love it: This one was a bit of a surprise. When he was younger, he didn’t care for it at all, but something switched when he turned 12 months. He loves to flip through this book at point out the items he can identify. He will bring it right up to my husband and I when he wants to read it and it’s one of those books he asks to read ‘again and again’ in one night.

These are the books that made bedtime magical for us between 12–18 months. If you’ve read any of them with your little one, I’d love to hear which were their favorites! And if you have a must-read book for toddlers, drop it in the comments so we can all add it to our shelves.
